Little Scotties Scoop
February 4, 2011
We've done a lot of science this week. We read a book about dinosaurs, then pretended to be archeologists and dig dinosaurs out of ice. The kids loved it! We will be adding dinosaurs frozen in big chunks of ice to the sand and water table for further exploration. We experimented with a variety of objects to see which would roll down a ramp and which would not. Then, we predicted which of 2 objects would roll down the fastest and 'raced' them down the ramps to test our predictions. We used masks to act out The Mitten. Everyone has been very interested in taking food orders and filling them in the house center so we will be converting our house center to a restaurant next week. The children made a list of what they know about restaurants and what we will need for our restaurant. Some students made menus for our restaurant. We have explored
shadows and guessed what objects are making the shadows. We mixed cornstarch and water to make 'goop'. We LOVE goop!
Yesterday we all enjoyed watching a dress rehearsal of Beauty and the Beast by our 4th and 5th grade students. The children were mesmerized while watching the play. They wanted to watch the movie so we watched it today. Make sure to ask your child about Beauty and the Beast! They loved it!
If you have not had a conference with me to review your child's progress to date, I will be contacting you to set up a time to meet with you.
After school care will be in Ms. Kim's classroom next week.
Keep practicing the popcorn letters or words with your child. Everything you need is in your child's Bee Book.
We are running low on the Clorox disinfectant wipes we use to clean the headphones at the computer and language master between children. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
Our class blog address is http://msgenellesamclass.blogspot.com/. Pleasse check it out!
Friday, February 11, we will be having our Valentine Party in our classroom from 12:30-1:00. We currently have 18 children in our class. A few parents have donated materials for the children to make bags to collect their valentines in and materials for an activity for you to do with your child during the party. Your child will need to leave the 'to' part of the valentines blank and just sign his/her name in the 'from' part. Send the valentines to school with your child that morning as we will be passing out our cards before the party! This party will be our monthly parent meeting as you will be doing an activity with your child and we will have some information for you about developing your child's writing skills. We will only need cookies and a drink
for the party since the children will be making something and we must be finished by 1:00. If you are interested in sending something, let me know.
One Friday each month our students will be allowed to get ice cream at lunch. You will need to send $.50 in the money pouch of your child's Bee Book for the ice cream. The ice cream date for February will be Friday, February 18. I will send a reminder closer to that date.
On Fridays we will be sending nap blankets, etc., home so you can wash them and send them back each Monday.
If you need to contact me, please email me at genelle.jones@glasgow.kyschools.us or call me at school at 659-0432 after 1:00. If you call at any other times during the school day, please leave a message with the office staff. Speaking to parents is always a priority, however my time when the children are at school is devoted to meeting their needs in the classroom. I will return your calls as soon as possible.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
